How is obesity identified?

Your body mass index (BMI) is the most commonly used metric to determine if your body weight is healthy or if you’re overweight or obese. Your BMI is calculated using your height and your weight. If your BMI is higher than 30, you’re considered obese. A healthy BMI ranges from 18.5-24.9 and overweight is within the range of 25-29.9.

Your BMI is just an estimate. Other indicators include your waist measurement. Men who have a waist circumference of 40 inches or 35 inches for women are more likely to be obese. If your waist-to-hip ratio is higher than 0.9 for men and 0.85 for women, you’re at risk of obesity.

What causes obesity?

Simply put, obesity develops when you consistently consume more calories than you use each day. However, the amount of calories you need in a day isn’t as straightforward as the 2000 calorie guidelines used on food labels. Your activity levels, weight, muscle mass, age, and more contribute to your basic caloric needs.

Certain hormonal imbalances and health conditions can make you more prone to weight gain and can make it difficult for you to lose weight. Some of these conditions include:

  • Hypothyroidism
  • Prader-Willi syndrome
  • Cushing’s syndrome
  • Arthritis and other conditions that decrease mobility
